Celebrating the Majesty of Sharks.
Sharks are apex predators and a crucial part in maintaining equilibrium of the marine food chain. However, the excessive demand for shark products has contributed to the rapid decline of many species, with several already nearing extinction. Removing sharks from our oceans will threaten the delicate balance of marine ecosystems , which over 1 billion people rely on as their main source of food.
An estimated 100 million sharks are caught worldwide every year, with up to 73 million of these caught to serve the shark finning industry. At least 50% of the world's shark fin is traded through Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Shark Foundation believes that by promoting shark conservation, we can make a big impact on a global problem. Please spread the word around the globe to vote for your support for CITES inclusion for all of the proposed eight shark species at the Doha meeting for CITES in March, 2010.
The sharks have no vote. They need yours.
The HK Shark Foundation (HKSF) is part of MyOcean, a registered Hong Kong charity dedicated to marine conservation. HKSF exists to raise awareness about the unsustainable pressures on shark populations around the world, in particular the pressure brought about by the practice of shark finning.
