Promoting responsible shark dive tourism.

Well as you're all aware I've been going gaga over the recent image submission from Bill Fisher, posted below. For me this image is just an incredible study of a great animal.

Many is the occasion that people ask me if I prefer video over photo or as to whether I shoot photo's underwater. My canned response is that personally I like to see the movement of an animal underwater, especially true for the mega-fauna species such as large sharks, mantas, whales and dolphins etc. I do like macro photography as this allows one to gully appreciate the textures and colors of the small stuff.

And then Bill goes and lands this on my desk. Whammo! Cheers Bill. This for me is a truly incredible shot. As I recently posted, I don't normally get so enthused about imagery, very far and few between shots will actually make me sit up and say "wow", this one certainly did.

Bill, if you'd like to share with us any story that may be behind this shot that would be greatly welcomed.

Cheers,
Mark.

Mark,

Thank You so much for your kind words, and I'm so glad you like this shot. I will get you you own printed copy soon. Here is the story behind this one . . .

Oct 16, 2009

It was our final day of diving at Guadalupe, and unfortunately, another fantastic expedition would soon come to an end. The day had begun with some great action from several male White sharks, and after spending a few hours in the surface cages, I now found myself in the submersible.

We were nearing the end of our dive when I saw what appeared to be Cal Rip-Fin coming in from the distance, and sure enough, it was. With his unmistakable dorsal fin, he is one of the most well known, and easiest sharks to identify at Guadalupe.

When Cal shows up, you know he won’t be shy. After some quality time down deep with Cal, we surfaced from the submersible, and I immediately went back in the surface cages where I was able to get this shot.

The appearance of Cal Rip-Fin on the final day of diving was a fantastic way to finish off a great trip. He stayed for the remainder of the day, and was still cruising around the Solmar as we bid him and Isla de Guadalupe farewell.

Thanks Mark,

Bill Fisher
