Celebrating the Majesty of Sharks.

I came across this image of LEMON SHARK with multiple drilling holes for a SAT TAG and thought this might be an issue for "UNFORTUNATE SIGHTINGS" knowifing full well that SAT Tagging serves a ligitimate purpose. BUT, come on!! Get it right the first time or leave the animal alone... Your thoughts?????

Fully agree with you there Paul. This is just shoddy work at best. Having worked with many scientists I have to state that some, a few not all, of them seem to be more about the science and less about the animal. The flippant attitude of "They'll get over it" really pushes my buttons. Thanks for posting.

Paul, thanks for sharing that with us. It's hard to believe that there are scientists out there who have a blatant disregard for the subject of their research ... but it is obvious when evidence (such as your photo) is produced. I'm not suggesting that all scientists are this callous, many of them are doing great work and in an orderly fashion with regards to their subjects.

Recently, in Australia, there was outcry over some Great White Shark researchers who were catching GW sharks off a surf beach with barbed hooks, then dragging them back all the way to shore removing the barbed hooks with great difficulty and maming the sharks, fixing a satellite tag and then releasing the sharks back out to see. The NSW Government had to put a stop to this form of catch and release ... but really, how f'n outrageous to think that some scientists would conduct themselves in this way?????? THINK guys, THINK.

Hey Paul,
I would say so. I know that we are trying to get valuable info when tagging, but maybe there is a better way to do it. When we go to the doctor and he draws a sample of blood, we would get pretty peed off if he kept missing the vein and kept poking more holes in us. I think sometimes we can be a little callous thinking it does not hurt and will heal quickly.
Anyway thats my opinion.

Cheers Sean
