Many people spear on scuba here in CA, it's quite common. I agree though- not a great deal of "sport" there (but I have serious issues with the whole concept of killing in the name of Sport anyway.)
Abalone collecting is strictly prohibited on scuba…
(FYI - I was diving the reefs of West Palm Beach with a few spearos...)
