Just saw this clip about a nurse shark with a ring around the gills from Jupiter, Florida. I'm sure the photo/video people will have mixed reactions to some of the commentary :)

What surprised me more than anything is the fact that the 'rescuing' diver let a speargun go in order to get to grips with the Frisby! Is hunting on SCUBA allowed in Florida?
(FYI - I was diving the reefs of West Palm Beach with a few spearos...)

After being pretty much conditioned to believe that spearfishing on SCUBA is internationally a 'No No' it just comes as a surprise is all. If that's how it is then that's how it is.

If that's how it is then it's disgraceful.
You cannot call spearfishing on scuba a sport by any definition of the word.
What skill must be possessed to ambush a fish.
I am further concerned with how many of these spearshafts have powerheads attached to them and what controls are in place to police bag limits and protect endangered species.
Many people spear on scuba here in CA, it's quite common. I agree though- not a great deal of "sport" there (but I have serious issues with the whole concept of killing in the name of Sport anyway.)
Abalone collecting is strictly prohibited on scuba though, I guess that's something.
