...in fact almost all commercial shark fishing is banned in French Polynesia, ...one exception is the Mako shark which is still sold and consumed entirely. But there is no special Mako shark fishing going on, ...they are mostly bycatch. We would be more happy if the ban would apply on this species too, ...but sometimes you have to make a compromise to get things moved in the right direction.
Considering the vast area French Polynesia is covering ( an area as big as Europe, from Portugal to the Ukraine and Norway to the south of Italy),... it makes it the biggest protective zone for sharks in the world.
